Understanding the AARTO Demerit System

Along with the implementation of the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) demerit system, South African drivers are facing a shift in traffic law enforcement. One of the best ways to stay compliant and steer clear of fines, is keeping your car’s maintenance in check.

Demerit System

The AARTO demerit system introduces a points-based approach to track and penalise drivers for traffic violations.

  • Points Allocation:

Each driver has 15 demerit points, with points being deducted based on the severity of the offense, ranging from 1 to 6 points.

  • License Suspension:

Falling below 0 demerit points results in a license suspension for one month per point lost, depending on the number of accumulated points.

  • Business Operations:

The demerit system applies differently to individuals and businesses, with the latter facing additional scrutiny and penalties for violations committed by their employees or company vehicles.
